Being just friends with Edie isn’t terrible. We enjoy each other’s company, and we like doing the same things. We don’t eat the same foods, but she’s open to healthier choices, and I’ve eaten a few sweets that she recommended, and so far, I’m still alive.

Finding out about her past helps a lot. She’s been through a lot in her short life. I’m surprised she has her head screwed on as straight as she does. She’s strong, stubborn, and has a mind of her own, I like that. I like it too damn much.

Being at the station this week has provided me some relief from the constant train of dirty thoughts going through my mind when I’m at home. I worry about her, though. I know her phone was clean, but I don’t like the thought of her being in the house alone for three days.

I called Fiona, and she’s been stopping by. So have the guys but not as often. I don’t want her to feel smothered. She has the security system, and she’s not dumb. Even if that prick shows up, she will be okay.

She starts working next week. They hired her on the spot Tuesday morning, and she started training videos and paperwork Wednesday. I have one night on at the fire station, and I can go home and back to having a constant boner.

I’m back at my bunk after dinner. I didn’t feel like watching TV with the guys tonight. I miss Edie. I prop my back against the headboard of my bed and call her. She answers right away.

“Hello?” she says as if she isn’t sure it’s me. I thought I programmed my number into her new phone. She should see my name when I call.

“Hey, what are you doing?”

“Oh, hi, just organizing a bit.”

“You sound surprised it’s me calling.”

“I didn’t look at the caller ID, so I guess I am.”

“You should always check who’s calling.”

“I know, my hands were full.”

“What could possibly be left to organize in my house? You have everything color coded and labeled already.”

“I got some containers for my shoes and had to label them.”

“Containers?”

“Yes, they’re like clear plastic shoe boxes. You put your shoes in them and they stay clean and dust free. You can see what pair they are through the box.”

“So why are you labeling them if you can see through the box?”

“I like to know which box belongs to which pair of shoes, so they can go back into their box when I’m done wearing them.”

“Aren’t shoes kind of dirty anyway? Why would you want to put them in a box?”

“So, they last longer silly,” she laughs like I’m the crazy one here.

“Oh, well, all right then.”

“You’d understand if you spent a lot of money on a pair of shoes and lost one of a pair or had a dog chew them up.”

I freeze. “Edie?”

“What?”

“You did not get a dog, did you? I saw you eyeing that stray shepherd at the vet clinic the other day.”

“I would never do something like that without checking with you first.
